Wasabi Sandwich Spread
This simple condiment will elevate your sandwich. It’s honey and soy flavors provide plenty of umami, and the wasabi adds a zing. It’s also an excellent dip for your French fries and chips!
Why I love this spread so much
I grew up eating sandwiches with a spread in a little jar with a brown label. For the life of me, I cannot remember what this sandwich spread was called, but it was so good in chicken salad or on a turkey sandwich. It was available until twenty years ago and then disappeared from my grocery store shelves. I can see the little jar’s old English font on the label. If any of you can remember the name of this spread, please let me know in the comments below so I can sleep tonight! All that to say, I love this sandwich spread because it reminds me of the spread I grew up using, only with an Asian twist. I love to use a wasabi sandwich spread on turkey or chicken sandwiches and dip my French fries in it. This spread is amazing on this grilled chicken sandwich. So everyone needs to try this spread. If you don’t like wasabi or horseradish, I challenge you to try this dip. Especially if you are a fan of honey mustard, this spread gives definite honey mustard vibes.

How to make wasabi sandwich spread
Mix the ingredients in a small bowl, whisking well to blend the flavors. Transfer to an airtight container and store in your refrigerator. However, you may finish it off in one meal, so you should go right ahead and double the recipe! I like to store this sandwich condiment in a pint-sized mason jar. Prep time is five minutes, so mixing this up at the last minute is easy.
Tips & Variations
- Substitutions: If you cannot find wasabi paste or have everything but the wasabi paste, you can substitute horseradish. It will change the texture of the spread, but it will give it a similar kick.
- Wasabi powder is another alternative that can be used when it’s available. (Wasabi powder is not always madewith actual wasabi rhizome; read the ingredients on the package to know for sure.) Wasabi powder can be used tocreate a paste with three teaspoons powder and one teaspoon water, mixed into a paste, and then combined with mayo, honey, and soy sauce.
- Sushi: My local grocery store sells some incredible to-go sushi. Sometimes, I treat myself to a sushi lunch and use wasabi spread as my fancy home sushi condiment!
- Favorite Sandwiches: Wasabi sandwich spread goes well with roast beef, turkey, chicken, and ham sandwiches. It gives your sandwich that boost of flavor you didn’t know it needed! For me, the perfect sandwich consists of a tomato slice, onion slices, a crunchy lettuce leaf, and turkey.
- Coleslaw: This also makes an amazing dressing for coleslaw. Add to a package of prepared slaw, add cilantro and extra pepper.
- Expiration: Wasabi sandwich spread will last a month or longer in the refrigerator.
If this spread is looser than you like for sandwiches, you can add more mayonnaise to make it thicker. I usually spread it on both pieces of bread and then I also like to have a little extra for dipping my sandwich in.
Did I say I like to tip everything in this sauce? Besides my finger I dipped my chips and my sandwich as I ate my lunch. I wished for some French fries or tater tots but they did not appear, but the chips did the trick!
My Grilled Chicken & Pineapple Sandwich is another amazing way to use this sauce! It’s one of our favorite grilled dinners.
