Puppy chow is a no-bake treat made by covering crispex cereal in a chocolate and peanut butter candy coating and tossing it in powdered sugar.

Puppy Chow is very popular in the Midwest. Us Midwesterners have to think of all sorts of treats to get us through the winter season. We are also a crowd that likes a good party, and we like to have lots of nibbles while watching various sports. Puppy chow is extremely hard to stop eating once you’ve started. We have some friends that have declared themselves the best at making Puppy Chow. I will admit their Puppy Chow is, or should I say, was superior to ours. That is until, my gal, Beth gave away her Puppy Chow making secrets! The SECRET to making the best Puppy Chow is making it in a extra large bowl, for tossing, and not to skimp on the powdered sugar!

  • Crispex Cereal
  • Butter
  • Peanut Butter
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Vanilla

To start, measure out your Crispex or Chex Mix cereal into a large bowl or lidded vessel. Set aside.

Combine butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave this mixture for about one minute at a time, stirring in between. Repeat this process until the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter are a silky smooth consistency, about three rounds in the microwave–depending on your microwave power. Careful not to over microwave, you don’t want gobs of peanut butter chocolate-y mess inside your microwave. Another tip, be sure to stir in between each round so you don’t wind up with hot spots in your bowl that will scald the peanut butter causing the mixture to come out clumpy and yucky.

Once your chocolate peanut butter mixture is a smooth consistency, stir in your teaspoon of vanilla. Careful handling the bowl and mixture–it will come out hot! Once that is combined you’re going to slowly pour it over your cereal. Use a wooden spoon or spatula to gently cover the cereal and chocolate peanut butter-y goodness. Once that’s got a good coating you’re going to pour in your powdered sugar, I like to do this in a few sections, if you’re using a bowl pour half the measured powdered sugar and give it a slight mix, then add the remaining sugar to the bowl. Use plastic wrap and cover the bowl. [If you’re using a container with a lid, follow the same steps but instead of plastic wrap secure the lid on your container and Get – to – shaking! Once everything is nice and coated pour Puppy Chow onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet to cool. Or if you can’t wait, taste test a handful for quality control. 😉

  1. People Puppy Chow is our favorite and I have that same Tupperware bowl (circa 1993) that I use to mix it in. We use a jumbo zip-lock bag and shake when we add the powdered sugar. When we want to be more civilized we called it "Snow Candy":)
