Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread cut into 12 1" slices
  • 12 tbsp butter softened
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • 1 tbsp minced onion dry or fresh
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard or yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp Beau Monde seasoning
  • 12 slices Gruyere cheese or 2 cup shredded

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400℉

  • Slice French bread in 1" thick slices, almost all the way through but not quite, leaving the loaf intact. Set bread on aluminum foil on a 10x15 baking sheet. The foil should be big enough to wrap the bread up in before placing it in the oven to bake.
  • In a small bowl, combine room-temperature butter (not melted, just soft) with minced onion, poppy seeds, lemon juice, Beau Monde seasoning, and Dijon mustard, mixing until smooth and combined.
  • Scoop a tablespoon of butter and spread it to cover each slice of bread.
Then place a slice of cheese between each slice of bread.
  • Wrap the loaf tightly in aluminum foil and bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. If you want the top toasty, unwrap it and put it back in the oven for five more minutes.
